Tattoo Aftercare
So, you’re here, which means you either just got a new tattoo or are about to get one. No matter which it is, the topic of tattoo aftercare is crucial. We know there is a lot of information out there about what you should do to ensure your ink heals properly and stays bright.
After getting a tattoo, it usually takes a few weeks for it to completely heal and be able to reveal your new ink in all its beauty. The process of tattooing is one that involves fine needles that wound your skin, as they deposit ink deep into layers of your skin. As a result, the tattoo healing process involves temporary stages of redness, oozing, itching, and peeling.
Tattoo Healing F.A.Q
How Long Does A Tattoo Take?
A tattoo takes two to four weeks to heal. However, it takes about three to six months for the skin underneath the tattoo to fully heal, this is dependent on specific skin reactions, tattoo size, and ink colors used.
How To Help Your Tattoo Heal More Quickly?
- Gently wash your tattoo but avoid other water: for one to two weeks, wash your tattoo with warm water and fragrance-free cleanser up to three times a day. Don’t submerge your healing tattoo in hot baths, long showers, hot tubs, lakes, oceans, or swimming pools
- Apply ointment or lotion: After washing your tattoo, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment two to three times a day – we recommend Softwasp ointment, avoid using petroleum-based products, which can fade your tattoo and keep your tattoo from airing out.
- NEVER itch or pick your tattoo: Picking off scabs or itching your tattoo will delay healing and may damage your ink. Drying your tattoo with washcloths or towels can also remove scabs and delay healing. Friction from wearing tight pants or shirts over your tattoo can also irritate the skin.
What Oitment Can Be Used For My New Tattoo?
We highly recommend using Softwasp tattoo balm for your new tattoos, there are few great other alternatives as well, such as cocoa butter or any cream that contains lanolin mainly used for its great healing properties.
Is Tattoo Scabbing Normal?
Yes, it’s perfectly normal, and a clear indication that your tattoo is healing, we recommend that you keep moisturizing your tattoo continuously especially when its dry or scabbing.
Can I Shower While My Tattoo Is Healing?
Absolutely! Just try to make sure the soaps and shampoos you use don’t contain alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Also – be careful when drying yourself off after the shower; pat dry the tattoo to avoid any unnecessary stress to the area.
What Is The Most Important Stage of Tattoo Healing?
Pain, Swelling and Scabbing (Days 3-6) – The first several days will go by with your tattoo essentially still being a raw open wound. It will likely be painful during cleaning or when clothes/other body parts rub against it.
